The British Council supports science, but in the words of that now grumpy
actor Michael Caine, "not a lot of people know that."
-----End Quoted (and cut) Message-----
Can't think of many people who do NOT know that the British Council is into
science. Maybe I have just been around for too long. (Don't answer that.)
Too many launches in Spring Gardens. And Lloyd and June (his immediate
predecessor) crop at all sorts of odd events.
The question is, does the British Council know that it is into science?
Those not directly working in the area, that is.
This is one of the many agencies that shows signs of "doing science" for the
sake of it rather than because it believes in it. At least, that is the
message that emanates from the upper reaches of the body. (Of course, the
Council is still recovering from a short spell under a scientific director.
But that takes us into lawyer territory.)It sometimes seems like another of
those arty farty bodies that can provoke apoplexy in folk like Sir Neil
Cossens.
I'm working on a project at the moment that might once have been up their
street. (Now with the DTI.) Seeking names of notable British scientists who
can appear on posters. Apart from the obvious victims, anyone got any ideas?
I naturally want to offer a mix of people, so all 'genders' and 'ethnics'
welcome.
