Dear Subscriber,
The Ph.D. Design list was established after the Ohio State University
conference on doctoral education in design. The purpose was to carryu on
the dialogue initiated at the conference.
The list now has 204 members.
The listowners are David Durling and Keith Russell.
The summer will see a new conference in La Clusaz, France, building on the
achievements of the Ohio Conference. The conference is titled Doctoral
Education in Design: Foundations for the Future.
Listowner Keith Russell in conunction with conference co-chairmen David
Durling and Ken Friedman are now reorganizing Ph.D. Design list as the
official communcation medium of the conference. This is in accord with its
initial purpose and its initial program. Durling, Friedman and Russell will
serve as list convenors and editors.
The list has been quiet for the most part. Before, during, and following
the conference, we hope to develop a new spirit of dialogue on the list. It
is our goal to develop a list that fulfills many of the purposes of
scholarly journals in the early days of science, while building a rich,
humanistic dialogue across international boundaries that will typify the
best opportunities of the information age.
All current subscribers are welcome to remain on this list, whether or not
they take part in the conference at La Clusaz. Please expect to be joined
by the La Clusaz participants, and expect to read news and notics
specifically related to La Clusaz.
We will soon post a note on the new possibilities and format of this list.
Best regards
Ken Friedman

PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE,
IT CONTAINS VITAL INFORMATION
Welcome to the PhD-Design discussion list.
This discussion list has been established for the exchange of
views and information about research training leading to the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Design and cognate
subjects.
The term 'design' is identified here principally with the
following fields: industrial, interior, theatre, automotive,
furniture, graphic, multimedia, jewellery, fashion, and textile
design, together with design management, crafts, ceramics and
glass.
The genesis for this discussion was an international conference
titled "Doctoral Education in Design' held at the Ohio State
University, USA, in October 1998. Delegates felt that the
business of the conference might best be continued by email
discussion in the intervals between future conferences.
