Some other distinctions come to mind...
1. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
* Degree is awarded on the basis of a single essay at the end of the
research (e.g., thesis, and supporting CD-ROM, exhibits, products etc.)
* Examination is made by peers.
* Viva voce (oral) examination is compulsory.
2. Doctor of Design (DDes)
* Degree is awarded on the basis of on-going completed assignments?
* Examination is made by module leaders?
* Written examinations at the end of the degree compulsory?
Of course, all of this is necessary matter-of-fact description and doesn't
attempt to answer the wider issues of why one would want to enroll for these
degrees or the purposes of them.
