Dear James:
I am Head of a new Industrial Design course at Icesi University in Cali,
Colombia.
The 5 year professional course is about to start it's third year, and we have
been working hard to set up a more contemporary design course, with more focus
on design management, than the usual latinamerican design courses (brought here
for the first time by germans).
We are 3 full time designers, with masters from London and Italy, giving this a
lot of thought.
Though, not as formal research, because here there is never enough money for
research. You have to work double to be able to do some research yourself,
establish courses and aims, and then put it to class practice, and then make
changes for the following time, improving. Also, we are aiming to do
university-industry work.
We have given thought to design methodologies, and we are trying to define what
they could be in our context. But it is all very preliminary. Also, design in
the region where we are, is something new, despite this being the second largest
city in Colombia, and Colombia having about 12 design courses all over the
country.
It could be of use for you and for us, even to have "a chat".
I also was a trainer in a design workshop with UNESCO last year for Afrikan
countries, in Afrika. Some information from this could be useful.
I would be interested to know why you are working on such topic.
Regards,
Maria F. Camacho
