I agree with your proposal that books are not the only type of "core"
texts a research student should read. Papers are equally important. I
am sorry your first reader is out of print and wonder whether your
publisher or a publisher would like to take it up again. I would
suggests that PhD students also get familiar with a "core" of
journals such as Design Studies, Design Issues, the Journal of Design
History, and others. I think it is good for students working in a
specific area of design studies, as I mentioned previously, to have
some knowledge of other areas, particularly current literature in
design research journals.
Regarding the texts you mention, Schon seems to be on
everyone's list, as does Simon although I personally have a number of
points of contention with Simon's "Sciences of the Artificial." But
that is the point of "core" texts. They are to be argued against as
well as taken on board.
