Nigel Cross writes, "wasn't this request for some introductory texts first
started by David Durling (on behalf of someone else) on the design research
list - it seems to have moved to the PhD list."
I'm not sure, but I think this conversation began with a post by Dick
Buhcanan dated Tue, 5 Sep 2000 and headed, "A design 'canon'?"
Dick asked,
"What is the essential knowledge of our field? What may we expect any
Ph.D. student to have read and considered? Would we be embarrassed if our
students have not read certain works by the time they graduate? -- and what
are those works? Is there a small set of works -- books and articles --
that we regard as core reading for any student working toward a Ph.D. in
Design?"
Nigel also asks, "Should it be copied/referred back to the dr list. How do
we do that, Ken?"
My view is we probably shouldn't copy it or refer it back to DRS list.
Conversations that migrate acorss lists become difficult to follow. The
virtue of the Mailbase archive system is that anyone who wishes to get up
to date on this can simply go to Mailbase and follow the past thread.
There is a second reason I propose that we do not copy this to DRS. Last
spring, during the debate on doctoral degrees, there was some grumbling
among DRS subscribers who weren't interested in long, deep discussions.
Listowner Conall O Cathain suggested at one point that we end the debate.
When we pointed out the interest in the subject and several colleagues
called for ongoing space for the subject, Conall graciously agreed to let
us continue. We did promise, however, that we would do our best to conduct
any future kinds of inquiry that promise to evolve as ongoing deep
inquiries with the potential of similar depth and continuity would take
place on Ph.D.Design..
One of the points of the Ph.D. Design list is to encourage and allow richly
developing inquiry with short posts or long, whether they go on for two
days or two years.
There is obviously some likelihood of overlapping areas of thematic
interest. Ph.D. was established after the Ohio conference. It is an obvious
forum for topics in any way related to themes and issues growing out of the
conferences at Ohio and La Clusaz, as well as similar issues developed by
the student doctoral consortium or by our network of colleagues. It is our
eventual plan to structure it as a kind of ongoing "proceedings" or
"transactions," using the Mailbase archival facility as a way to sort
threads, store contributions, etc. We may also develop other mechanisms for
archiving and supporting discourse.
The overlap means we may be raising issues that might be appropriate to the
DRS list and many of us are subscribers. The main difference is that this
list is owned by David Durling and Keith Russell, and that I work with them
on some of the ideas as an editorial colleague. But the other difference is
that we welcome and encourage the development of ongoing dialogue and even
debate in ways that may not be considered appropriate by all subscribers to
DRS list.
My suggestion is that we notify DRS subscribers that Ph.D. Design exists,
and that they are welcome to join. It may also be appropriate from time to
time to send out notices when particularly interesting threads arise.
Best regards,
Ken
