Are you sure that the supports in question are steel, or cast iron?
Extensive parts of the Halykyn Deep drainage tunnel roof is
supported by cast iron columns, bearing steel crossbeams, and very
effective they are, too, Although not particularly effective against
side pressure, which has broken one or two, they seem to be
'bearing up well'.
