CALL FOR PAPERS
December 2000
On the occasion of its 10th anniversary the Institut Wiener
Kreis/Vienna Circle Institute (IVC), together with the
University of Vienna, Center for Interdisciplinary Research
(CIR), organizes an international conference on
THE VIENNA CIRCLE AND LOGICAL EMPIRICISM
Re-Evaluation and Future Perspectives of the Research and
Historiography
to be held at the University Campus of the University of
Vienna, July 12-14, 2001
The Institute Vienna Circle (IVC), a member of the
International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science
- Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science,
was founded as a nonprofit society in 1991 on the occasion of
its first event, a conference on "Wien - Berlin - Prag
. Der Aufstieg der wissenschaftlichen Philosophie/Vienna -
Berlin - Prague. The Rise of Scientific Philosophy"
(Centenaries of Carnap, Reichenbach, and Zilsel) in Vienna.
Since 1997 the IVC works on a contractual basis in close
cooperation with the University of Vienna, CIR, and other
related Departments, and has aimed from the beginning of its
activities ten years ago at the promotion, cultivation and
dissemination of the scientific philosophy and philosophy of
science of the Vienna Circle/Logical Empiricism. This
includes also the documentation, application and development
of its results. In the spirit of the members of the Vienna
Circle, the IVC adheres to a pluralist and enlightened
conception of science which includes a commitment to the
democratization of knowledge and of science and to the
critique of irrationalism, dogmatism, and fundamentalism in
any form. In order to realize these goals, the IVC organizes
conferences and lectures in Austria and abroad, edits three
book series (English and German), and it maintains a library
and an archive with materials by and on Vienna Circle members
and related philosophers.
Subsequent to the conference announced with this call for
papers the first Vienna International Summer University -
Scientific World Conceptions (VISU/SWC) with the special
topic "Unity and Plurality of Science" will be organized by
IVC and the University of Vienna (CIR) at the same location.
