FILM STARS IN THE NINETIES
University of Sussex
Falmer, Brighton, BN1 9RQ, UK
Saturday 7 April – Sunday 8 April 2001
This conference aims to relaunch star studies at a time when they have
faded considerably from view. A number of big changes appear to have
taken place in the nature and operation of star systems across the
1990s, and we are bringing together the key researchers and their work
for this two-day conference in order to begin the wide
reconceptualisation that is now needed.
Among the questions which our participants will be addressing will be
the following:
In what ways are the economic settings and social / cultural functioning
of film stars in the 1990s distinct from those of earlier decades?
What new academic paradigms are needed to consider the commercial and
symbolic significance of film stars in an era of proliferating
inter-media connections?
What advances have been made in the study of screen acting?
Can animated characters be understood as 'virtual stars'?
What can academic study reveal about new outlets for 'talk' about stars
such as the internet?
What can we learn from studying audiences' relations with film stars?
How do stars articulate with constructions of ethnic / national
identity, gender, and sexuality?
The conference is being organised and timetabled in such a way that
there will be maximum opportunity for discussion, for comparing ideas
and arguments and assembling the consequences. It is our intention to
issue to everyone attending the conference a CD-Rom containing a draft
of each speaker's presentation. We are asking speakers not to read a
paper, but to present some of their main ideas, with illustrations, on
the assumption that those attending will have had an opportunity to look
over the main ideas in their draft paper in advance.
Film Stars in the Nineties assembles a mix of established and emergent
scholars to address these and other questions from diverse critical
perspectives.
