Aeon, era, period, series, stage are types of subdivision of the
geological column, but not defined as fixed lengths of time. Aeon can
also mean 1000,000,000 years according to my dictionary of science and
technology but that's not much help here. Can't see any suitable words in
Roget's Thesauraus either
