Robin, I agree with your definition. What's latent cannot be completely
hidden--otherwise, it would be unrealizable, i.e. the light in the cave
signifies that there's something in the cave, however hidden and unrealized
that something is.
Mondrian is a good example, especially if one traces his development from
Post-Impressionism (the Dallas Museum of Art has a most interesting tree
that he did) to his more geometric work. The thick brushwork remains, but it
rarely receives attention. So it is with Freud and dreams--what's latent may
be on the surface, but it may have escaped our attention--by repression or
otherwise.
