CALL FOR PAPERS
See/Hear: Music and Film
University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 9 November 2000
There will be a day-conference on Thursday 9 November 2000 devoted to
Music and Film. This is organised jointly by the Popular Music and
Song Project (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/sml/POPMUSIC/singing.html) and the
Centre for Research into Film (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/crif).
The interplay between music and film has emerged as a vibrant area
both in film studies and in musicology. While opera and film had been
of some interest in film studies during the 1980s, more recently the
field has been shaped by the work of psychoanalytically-inclined
writers such as Claudia Gorbman (Unheard Melodies, 1987) and Caryl
Flinn (Strains of Utopia, 1992) on the one hand, and more formalist
writers such as Kathryn Kalinak (Settling the Score, 1992) on the
other. At the same time, there has been increasing interest in popular
music and film, as evidenced by Jonathan Romney and Adrian Wootton's
collection, The Celluloid Jukebox (1995).
We welcome proposals in any area of music and film, both from scholars
working in film studies who may have an interest in the interface
between music and film, as well as musicologists with interests in
film. Proposals for papers of 20 minutes should give the title, an
abstract of 150-200 words, and should be accompanied by information on
the proposer's institutional affiliation, publications and current
projects. Proposals should be sent, preferably by email, to Professor
Phil Powrie ([log in to unmask]) AND Dr Vanessa Knights
([log in to unmask]) by 1 July 2000.
