Brynjulf Otnes, Oslo, Norway made a thesis on morphological examination of
renal stones in 1983 (Otnes B, Urinary Stone Analysis. Methods, Materials
and Value, Scand J Urol Nephrol, Suppl 71, 1983).
In short: It is possible to judge the components of renal stones from their
morphological shape and using a dissection microscope but it needs a lot of
experience.
Of course it is difficult to establish any QC program for such a
morphological test.
As far as I know the only method where a satisfactory QC program is
possible is a quantitative wet chemical method like that described in the
Clin Chim Acta article of Larsson et al as mentioned earlier.
The Merck semiquantitative method was suggested not to give satisfactory
results (Larsson et al. On the analysis of urinary calculi. In: Brockis et
al. Urinary calculus 1981;383-6).
