Does anyone have any "dos and don'ts" for design of an order entry screen
for clinicians?
The Information Services department in our hospital is trying to set up a
home-made system to allow clinicians to enter requests into terminals on
the wards, which would then be downloaded into our Citation LIS. I realise
that there are a number of commercial products around which do this but our
hospital is insistent on doing it themselves. They have come to the lab
asking how the screens should be designed and are suggesting basically
using our present request forms (7 over all path disciplines) as templates
on the screen with tickboxes. Another approach is endless dropdown lists
of individual tests and/or a huge menu of every conceivable test.
Since the design of the hardcopy request form is crucial in influencing
utilisation of lab tests, what are the views and experiences of list
members on computer screen design? What changes in test requesting
patterns have people noticed when computerised requesting was introduced
and did they relate to the actual screen design?
Many thanks for any suggestions or comments.
