PhD studentship in: Palaeoenvironment and Archaeology of Shell Middens from
Southern Baja California, Mexico
This project will examine large shell middens along the coast of La Paz,
Southern Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. These middens were made by the
Pericue Indians a not very well known but very interesting group. The successful
applicant will be involved in the excavation of these middens and should be
expected to integrate the archaeology found in them (lithics, animal bone, human
skeletons) together with a detailed palaeoenvironmental study of the shells used
by the Pericues including species represented and stable isotope studies to
reconstruct past environments and diet. The project will use a variety of
archaeological, palaeoecological and dating techniques depending on the
interests and experience of the successful applicant but may include oxygen
(shells) and strontium isotopes studies (human skeletons). The studentship is in
collaboration with Drs Angela Lamb and Melanie Leng from the NERC Isotope
Geosciences Laboratory at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham.
The anticipated start date is October 1st 2005. Applicants should have, or be
about to obtain, either (i) at least an upper second Ba/BSc Honours degree in
Geography, Archaeology, Geology or a related field; or (ii) a relevant masters
degree. Applications should be in the form of a letter of application outlining
your research interests and a C.V. (including the names of two referees).
Applications should be submitted to Dr Silvia Gonzalez by Friday 1st July 2005.
