medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. April) is the feast day of:
Marcellinus of Embrun (d. c. 374) Marcellinus was an African priest
who went with two companions to work as a missionary in Gaul. His
headquarters was Embrun, and he became first bishop there, but was
driven out by Arian persecution and spent the rest of his life hiding
in the hills.
Marcian (d. c. 488) Marcian lived in Bourges, but fled when the
Visigoths occupied the place. He became a monk at Auxerre. M. was
put in charge of the community's livestock, and was famous for his
rapport with both wild and domesticated animals. The monastery was
later named after him.
Hildegund (d. 1188) Hildegund was born to a knightly family at Neuss
(Germany). After her mother died she accompanied her dad on a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem, dressed as a boy for her safety (she was 12
at the time). H's father died, and she made her own way back home.
Eventually she became a Cistercian monk at Schonau, hiding her sex
until her death. H's cult was popular in the later Middle Ages but
she was never formally canonized. Her story appears to be authentic.
Agnes of Montepulciano (d. 1317) Agnes was a Tuscan who entered the
convent at Montepulciano when she was 9. She became abbess of a new
convent at Procena at the age of 15. In c. 1300 she was lured back
to Montepulciano when the inhabitants built a new convent (of which
she became prioress). A. was famous for her visions, levitated, and
is credited with many miracles. She was canonized in 1726.
