medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>By chance,
*NO*thing happens "by chance".
>I just came across a reference to this situation in Pierre Maraval, "The
Earliest Phase of Christian Pilgrimage in the Near East
(before the 7th century)," Dumbarton Oaks Papers, 56 (2002), pp. 66-67
the latest issues (from 1999) of DOP are available on line from the D.O.'s
"etexts" site, in .pdf (Acrobat) format:
http://www.doaks.org/etexts.html
this article is here :
http://www.doaks.org/DOP56/DP56ch05.pdf
most of this issue is devoted to the papers from :
Pilgrimage in the Byzantine Empire: 7th15th Centuries
Dumbarton Oaks Symposium 2000
http://www.doaks.org/DOP56.html
also of interest to Westerners for comparative purposes is this article:
Alice-Mary Talbot
Pilgrimage to Healing Shrines: The Evidence of Miracle Accounts
http://www.doaks.org/DOP56/DP56ch10.pdf
quite an amazing resource, that site --i wish there were more like it.
btw, if one has access to an OCR program which can import and read .pdf files
it is a fairly simple matter to end up with a digital text of suchlike a file
(takes up a *lot* less bandwidth, can be printed out more efficiently, and can
be searched for text strings).
also, one can download scanned materials from a site like the B.N.'s wonderful
Gallica (http://gallica.bnf.fr) in .tff format and run them through the OCR
and end up with the same result.
however, the only problem with those gallica files is that they are frequently
of such poor optical quality that the OCR program spits out a lot of
mistakes.
best from here,
christopher
