medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear all,
I wonder if anyone knows of any historiography on something that turns up
in the section on magic in Gratian's Decretum (C. 26): the idea that
priests might say a mass for the dead in the name of a person who's still
alive, in order to make them die more quickly. Gratian says this is a form
of magic, and so too do later writers like Raymond of Penafort.
There's nothing on it in Lester Little's book on liturgical cursing, so I'm
a bit stumped - any suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks and best wishes,
Catherine
