medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
One example shows that the position of mendicant monasteries were not meant
to be just around the gates; I presume the situation is about "last arrived,
last served". When in Troyes there is a quarrel between two monasteries,
around 1249, Franciscan are offered a position downtown (Cf Faral Bastin's
commentaries on the Dit des cordeliers)

whenever possible ....
i know nothing about Augustinian situating, but it seems that a case could
be
made for many early middlevil Benedictine houses being founded just outside
the walls --or down hill from-- the citadels of Gallo-Roman Merovingian
cities
(Chartres, Auxerre, Tours, Paris, etc.).
this meant, frequently, that at some point in the High M.A. they came to be
"by city gates", when the city expanded, first beyond its original walls and
then when a new set of walls was added to incorporate the new settlements.
because the Benedictine houses usually had their own independent set of
walls,
their outlying "suburbs" were frequently incorporated as part of the new
defensive system, complete with a city gate near by.
