medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi, Carlos
Nice topic. Another, rather odd, article which touches on the subject of the
significance of bare feet (in antiquity, so it may not be of much help to
you) is M. J. Heckenbach, is the first part of De nuditate sacra sacrisque
vinculis (Religionsgeschlichtliche Versuche und Vorarbeiten 9: 1911). If I
remember correctly, it is heavy on citations and short on interpretation.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello Carlos,
That is an interesting question you raise, and I would think a
significant feature. I understand that in the Book of Ruth, the
removal of a shoe, had some legal implications...whether it did in
medieval law, I'm not sure, but it might be a route to check out.
If you read Ruth 4:1-12, you find that a shoe or sandal signified a
form of redemption, only a man who owned something could rightfully
set his foot upon it..it was a symbol of power over something. The
giving of a shoe was a token payment in certain transactions.
But, there is no act of giving, so perhaps this old Hebrew custom is
not applicable. I have found a reference in an article (which I have
not read) which speaks to this feature on these works: W. Weisbach,
"'Ein Fuss beschuht, der andere nackt' Bermerkungen zu einigen
Handzeichnungen des Urs Graf," ZEITSCHRIFT FUR SCHWIEZERISCHE
ARCHAEOLOGIE UND KUNSTGESCHICHTE IV (1942), p. 120. In this instance
there is a relationship with lust, the lack of a shoe...
Happy digging, Harriet.
