I have been compiling a list of all the ways that public libraries are saving money but avoiding closing libraries at the Public Libraries News website (click "saving money without closing libraries" link on right). The list comes from reading all of the media articles on public libraries (since roughly November last year) for the site and noting anything new. I have linked to the newspaper article whenever possible.
There's 23 separate options at the moment, with one of them (income generation) having 14 sub-examples in it. I have tried to put in all known pros and cons to each. Thanks to this thread, water coolers are now listed. Some of the options are not ones that will come easily (I hope) to anyone on this list but are included for the sake of completeness and as an awareness of proposals that are being put forward seriously by someone, somewhere.
I would of course welcome any additions to the list - just email me - or any thoughts upon it.
Regards
Ian Anstice
