To answer Philip's enquiry, as from October people will have the option of
opting out of the 'public' electoral register. There will be the full
register which (depending on your local authority) may only be viewed at an
Electoral Registration Office or possibly public libraries, and a public
register. The public register will be the one which may be sold to
commercial companies. The idea is that people who do not wish to have their
details publicly available, such as single women, will not appear on the
register, and their details will not be sold on. I certainly will be taking
my name of the electoral register as soon as I can - hopefully it will stop
some the mountains of junk mail I get (and yes, I know about the mailing
preference service!!)
It is explained quite well on the British library web site,
http://www.bl.uk, and do a search 'electoral registers'.
