Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at C4X Discovery

Salary: £35,000.00 minimum + extensive benefits

Hours: 40hrs per week. Mon-Fri (core hours 10am-4pm)

Location: London Office

Reporting To: VP, Novel Target Biology & Genomics

Grade: 5

Grade Responsibilities:

   - Provide leadership or management to key projects within area of
   expertise
   - Apply knowledge in area of specialism to influence project progression
   - Make independent decisions that determine the successful delivery of
   project outcomes
   - Proactively troubleshoot to identify solutions to problems in own area
   of work
   - Contribute ideas to improve working practices

C4X Discovery is currently looking to extend its drug discovery team with
an experienced, highly motivated Senior Bioinformatician, with human genome
experience.

Background:

C4X Discovery is a drug discovery company based in Manchester and London:
it successfully concluded its first licensing deal during 2018. The company
is based around two key cutting-edge technologies: Conformetrix analysis of
small molecule shape in solution; and Taxonomy3 analysis of human genetic
datasets.

Taxonomy3 is a unique method for analysing human genetic data developed by
C4X and based on application of novel mathematics. The method extracts
additional genetic insights from the datasets, and these insights are used
to identify drug targets for progression within C4X Discovery. We are now
looking for a bioinformatician to join our discovery genetics function to
expedite this transition of genetic insights into new drug targets. This
individual will make a significant impact in a number of areas:

   1. Analysis of the results of Taxonomy3 requires access to, and
assimilation of, a broad range of algorithms and databases. Ensuring that
the most appropriate approach is identified to progress our projects and
applying these methods to our datasets are important aspects of the role.
   2. The output of the Taxonomy3 analysis comprises a list of genes of
interest, plus gene-gene interactions. This unique output requires
cutting-edge bioinformatic assessment to identify key pathways, networks
etc.*en route* to identifying novel drug targets.
   3. The Taxonomy3 method is already yielding valuable results that have
been translated into drug discovery programmes. In addition, we are looking
to develop the methodology further to enhance the outputs from the
analyses. Significant bioinformatics input will also be needed as a key
   part of these technology developments.
   4. An additional important part of the role is to keep abreast of
developments in the bioinformatics field and incorporate them into C4X’s
target identification and drug discovery pipelines.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative bioinformatician to join an
innovative discovery genetics team and make a significant impact in drug
discovery.

Role Responsibilities:

   - Identifying and applying appropriate bioinformatics methods to our
Taxonomy3 analysis pipeline to expedite drug target identification
   - Using bioinformatics expertise to support: effective management of
   genetic datasets; development and maintenance of the Taxonomy3 Database;
   development of the NGS platform
   - Keeping up with bioinformatics progress – databases, tools,
methodology – and drive the development of new in-house tools based on these
   - Maintaining and improving the Taxonomy3 support and visualisation
functions (e.g. SNP-to-gene mapping, bash, Rshiny)
   - Taking initiative in progressing R&D of the Taxonomy3 method

Education, Experience & Skills Required:

   - PhD in Genetics/Biology/Statistics/Biostatistics/Bioengineering, or
equivalent experience: postdoctoral experience in drug discovery is
   advantageous
   - Experience of the application of genome technologies and
bioinformatics in the context of human genomics and genetics
   - Unix/Linux environment expertise, plus advanced programming skills in
Perl/Python and shell scripting or other equivalent languages
   - Knowledge of and experience with the use of statistical methods and
programming languages such as R and experience with query languages (e.g.
   mySQL)
   - Familiarity with public biomedical information resources such as
genome browsers, data repositories and annotation databases
   - Good presentation skills/Team player/Eager to learn and put together
   novel methodological pipelines
   - Excellent team working, organisational and communication skills and
   attention to detail.
   - Fluent written and spoken English
   - Knowledge of NGS pipelines and analysis methods would be advantageous

C4X Discovery offers a broad selection of health benefits, share options, a
generous pension scheme and an annual, discretionary bonus scheme.
