I find Bynum absolutely brilliant and essential for an understanding of
women's religious history (and I think her *Jesus as Mother*, *Holy Feast
and Holy Fast*, and *Fragmentation and Redemption* would all be useful for
Wyld Man's course), but like everyone she does have her flaws. Amy
Hollywood has done an excellent job of taking Bynum to task and developing
what I find to be an even more compelling argument (with regard to certain
issues) in her *The Soul as Virgin Wife* (Notre Dame, 1995). This won't
help with medieval English mystics, though--it analyzes Mechthild of
Magdeburg, Marguerite Porete and Meister Eckhart. An article that takes
issue with Bynum and also discusses Julian of Norwich is Renee Neu Watkins,
"Two Women Visionaries and Death: Catherine of Siena and Julian of Norwich,"
Numen vol. 30, Fasc 2, 1983, 174-198; but I remember not being very
impressed by this article.
For medieval English mystics, you might want to look at:

Kempe* (1983)
