Dear learned list members,
although I have been on the list for some time,
I have not been able to overcome my shyness
in order to introduce myself properly before now.
I am working on my doctoral thesis, the subject of which
is the impact of the Reformation on marriage and
sexual crime in Finland and Sweden, but I am also
generally very interested in medieval marriage.
But now I have a query to you all concerning
information on rites of purification of women after
marriage. It seems that the introducing of women
into church after childbirth was commonplace all
over medieval Europe, but there are some references
to the custom of introduction of women into church and
their purifying after marriage. There were fees _pro
mulierum introducendarum in ecclesiam post nupcias_.
Has anyone any knowledge of such local
customs? Any information regarding this custom or
suggestions of further reading on or off the list
would be most welcome.
With regards,
Mia Korpiola
