Dear Prof Shimm
I think you may have got the Atlantic Margin wrong. It is ceratinly
multi-episodic in its rift/subsidence history. As a starting point I would
recommend a large thematic set of papers on Passive Margins published in the
Journal of the Geological Society in May 1997. Look particularly at the
papers discussing the Norwegian Atlantic margin, a very well studied area of
multiple rift history.
I think whoever suggested to you that a passive margin can only have one
rift/subsidence event is clearly leading you astray.
