I recall examining several inventory lists from XIIIthc Cistercian
monasteries (searching for "evidence" of a response toburgeoning affective
piety) which could adequately compete... including a crystal vial with
"sighs of the Virgin":, and a reliquary of "berries" crushed by the feet of
Christ.
I think there exists a fixed market for such entry points to popular piety.
I agree with your assesment and perhaps the list procurator could ubraid
him a bit.
