Walter Specht has a useful article ("Chapter and Verse Division") in The
Oxford Companion to the Bible. He attributes chapter divisions to Stephen
Langton ( d. 1228; U Paris, later Abp of Canterbury) and the current
numbered verses to Robert Stephanus (1551 Gk/Lt ed of the NT).
