Have been following the discussion concerning the views of R. I. Moore with
great interest. I lost some of my e-mail and am not able to go back very
far. In an e-mail of around Nov. 1 Richard Landes refers to "Asad's
argument"--it "offers a much more flexible model of religious institutions
handling a religious phenomenon that is at once invigorating (and valuable)
and dangerous." What is "Asad's Argument"? Where can I read about it?
I am wondering about the possible synthesis of various viewpoints expressed
thus far. It seems to me that the synthesis would lie somewhere between a
"persecuting mentality," perceived "judaizing" developments, and the
very real influx of heterodox ideas from outside of orthodox institutions.
If possible, I would appreciate a response in a non-attached form.
Thank you,
Pat McGurk
