Spotted in today's UK TV listings:
Chanel 4, 11:30 pm: The Truce (Francesco Rosi, 1997) John Turturro as
Primo Levi after his release from Auschwitz.
Any good? Don't know, but you might want to set your video recorders.
On the question of DVDs and regional differences, the following is from
December Empire magazine (p. 70):
Q; I've heard you can make your DVDs play all regions. Is it legal and,
if so, how do you do it?
A: As awkward as it may seem, there is a degree of logic behind
categorising DVDs into their six regions -- namely, that release dates
vary from country to country and if movie-hungry punters were able to get
hold of, say, an American copy of The Matrix on DVD, before it arrived in
our cinemas, they wouldn't bother forking out their hard earned to go and
see it. Fewer people would go to the cinema, less money would get pumped
back into the studios and fewer films would get made. Not a good scenario
all round.
Lectures aside, it is possible to make a DVD play all regions.
Approximately 50-70 [pounds] and a quick stroll down to any decent
electrical store should see you right, as any independent retailer who
knows his onions will be able to dab a touch of solder onto the chip
inside (simply tell him how many regions you want to be able to play) and
away you go. Most definitely frowned upon by the industry, the process is
nevertheless *not* illegal. But be warned, by tampering, chances are
you'll invalidate your warrantee, and should anything subsequently go
wrong, you'll be up that proverbial creek.
Hope that helps someone
Elizabeth
