I wonder if anyone can tell me the whereabouts in the UK of a copy of
the following:
ed R N Sauvage, La Chronique de Sainte Barbe-en-Auge (Memoires de
l'Academie Nationale de Caen, 1906).
The Augustinian priory of Ste Barbe-en-Auge (Calvados) held property
in England, for which its chronicle is a significant source.
I've given the bibliographical details exactly as they're given in
VCH, Gloucestershire, vol viii, 1968, 253, n.80 (which is within the
section dealing with the parish of Beckford). The British Library's
Inter-Library Loan service has drawn a blank on this volume anywhere
in the UK, ie in respect of a copy that could be lent to Birmingham
University Library for me to use there. That doesn't mean that there
isn't a copy somewhere in the UK which is 'outside' the ILL system
and/or not available for loan. I've made my own enquiries, too,
especially in Gloucestershire, since I find it very hard to believe
that A Crossley, the author of the VCH Gloucs chapter on Beckford
(who is no longer around to ask), can have gone to France simply to
read the relatively small amount that the chronicle contains about
Beckford. But I've drawn a complete blank. I've also applied to the
international version of Inter-Library Loans but have recently been
told that it doesn't look as if anything will be forthcoming. And
I've been in touch with Donald Matthew, author of Norman Monasteries
and their English Possessions, but again without success.
Can anyone help me, please? I'm willing to travel anywhere in the
UK to see this book, so _any_ sighting of it will be excellent news!.
