I am a Junior at Duke University, taking a double major in Religion and
Medieval-Renaissance Studies. I have been subscribed to this list for
almost a year.
This semester I am taking a Divinity School course entitled "Out of
Africa", which traces the influence of early Christianity in North
Africa upon the Latin Church.
During various archaeological presentations, it occurred to me that the
role of the Olive, the Olive Leaf, and Olive Oil is significant within
this setting.
I realize that this list specializes in a later time period, but I am
hoping that one or two of the scholars present can perhaps direct me
towards useful sources. Any shared thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.
Upon the advice of my professor, I have searched the patrologia latina
web site, and found many useful refs, particularly in Tertullian's De
Corona. I have also found archaeological reports on the cultivation of
olives in north africa, and intend to go through art history sources,
the Bible, and historical works on the various cultures present in North
Africa (Berber, phoenician, Greco-Roman)
What I am looking for is any connection between Olives in the
indigenous, Phoenician, Roman and Christian religious traditions in
north africa, and any carry- overs to medieval christianity. As the
topic is so broad, I would appreciate any pointers or thoughts you might
have.
(note: I read English, French, German, a bit of Arabic, Latin and, for
what its worth, Old Norse)
thank you very much
