Dear list-members!
In class, in course of translating Gallus Anonymous, we came across a linguistic problem which I hope you could help us to solve. Is there a proper English term for the pagan rite of the first cutting of hair, when a boy passes from the child's to the man's status? Gallus calls it "tonsura" but I believe in translation one should stress the difference between this custom and the ceremony of entering monastic order. All suggestions will be highly appreciated.
Best,
Elena Lemeneva
