Hello,
How nice to find somebody who takes an interest in poor old
'Erb, a letter writer who often gets shoved to one side and
forgotten about, at least as far as his literary output is
concerned. I am afraid I can add no titles to the ones
already furnished by other list-members (for one thing, all
my files are at home), but I can tell you that a Ph D
student here at Southampton, whom I have been tutoring, is
working on a new edition of Herbert's letters, with English
translation. Unfortunately, Marilena Atzei has had to
suspend her studies and go back home to Cagliari, for
family reasons, but she does intend to carry on working on
her edition part-time and I am sure would be happy to have
somebody to discuss Herbert with. If you like, I can dig
out her address. Also, I am working on the genre of letter
collections in general and have written a short article on
Herbert's letter writing techniques, due to be published in
Classica et Mediaevalia (Danish journal)in December; one
day I will (honest!) follow it up with a longer article on
his letter collection as an example of the genre. I would
be very interested to hear of other ongoing work on
Herbert; I don't get the impression that his fan-club is
over-subscribed at the moment.
