New Library - New Frontier
Chris Batt, OBE
Thursday 4 November 1999, 6.30-9pm - Wray Park Centre, Reigate
THE RHETORIC
"The networking of public libraries will place them in the forefront of the drive to create an educated, informed and ICT-literate society. The library is an enormously powerful agent of change: accountable to and trusted by people, and integral to education, industry, government and the community" (New Library: the People's Network, 1997: Introduction).
"The Commission's programme is a clear route map to achieve nothing less than a revolutionary change in the nature and importance of our libraries" (Matthew Evans, Chair of the Library & Information Commission).
AND NOW THE REALITY
Led by Chris Batt, OBE, the Library & Information Commission's New Library Network Team will oversee and advise on the implementation of the New Library Network. Well known for his longstanding and passionate commitment to integrating ICT's in public libraries, Chris Batt's mission is to realise his vision of a common carrier network which is filled with dynamic, interactive and imaginative services for everyone which seamlessly interrelates with the host of other networking initiatives currently impacting all LIS sectors (NHSnet, NGfL and UfI - to name just a few).
Chris Batt will share his thoughts on what the People's Network is, its significance and relationship with other networking initiatives, how it will unfold, and how the New Library Network team will co-ordinate developments. This is your chance to hear it from the horse's mouth, and provides a valuable opportunity to share your thoughts with colleagues from a range of sectors also aspiring to embrace the Government's vision of the information age.
