PhD position – Structural geology
A PhD position is available on the project „Kinematic analysis of rock
flow in ductile shear zones using three-dimensional study of natural and
experimental porphyroclasts“. The project is financed by the Austrian
Scientific Fund (WFW) and accounted for two years.
Project leader: Prof. Eckard Wallbrecher
Informal scientific supervisor: Prof. Cees Passchier
Principal research worker: Dr. Vladislav Alekseev
Location of the research: Institute of Geology and Paleontology,
Karl-Franzens University, Graz, Austria
Description of the project.
The research deals with the kinematics in ductile shear zones and
focuses on the problem of distinguishing the major flow types
(monoclinic, triclinic, and more complicated flows) in natural shear
zones. Aim of the research is to develop tools for recognizing the flow
patterns which could be applicable in the field and laboratory studies.
The approach to solution is the 3D study of mantled porphyroclasts,
since these structures preserve the information about the flow in matrix
and the deformation history. Methods of investigation include the field,
laboratory, and experimental studies. Natural porphyroclasts will be
studied using parallel-sectioning technique and an image analysis
system, that will be followed by the 3D reconstruction of their shapes.
The field areas are located in the Baltic shield (the southwestern
Sweden and the Kola Peninsula of Russia). The experimental study focuses
on 3D simulation of the development of porphyroclast systems in
transpressional/transtensional ductile shear regimes.
PhD stipend: 328.000 ATS yearly (brutto). Duration of the stipend is 2
years.
Requirements to applicants:
- Good spatial imaginativeness is absolutely necessary.
- Strong skills in computing (IBM system), ability to solve hardware and
software problems. Experience of work with image analysis systems (e.g.,
OPTIMAS, GOCAD, etc.) as well as with CORELDRAW, AUTOCAD, MATHEMATICA
would be advantageous.
- Excellent technical and organizational capabilities in order to build
up modelling machines, carry out experiments, and conduct rock sample
preparation.
- Good English and German are both necessary (reading and writing),
basic knowledge of Russian would be advantageous.
- Deep background in structural geology, metamorphic petrology, and
mathematics.
- MS degree.
The successful candidate will deal with:
- Rock sample preparation (parallel sectioning technique).
- Processing 2D sectional images and construction of 3D images of
mantled porphyroclasts.
- Construction of modelling apparatuses and doing analogue experiments.
