<< Alexandria was some distance from the scene of Christ's early life, but
was even before the time of Christ a philosophical centre. One finds a
thriving school of Platonism here. Alexandrians were given to a
philosophical and mystical speculation which did not always keep its
feet on the ground. Consequently they affirmed the divinity of Christ,
but sometimes came up with theologies which did not adequately affirm
his humanity. >>
If I remember correctly, Alexandria produced a little bit of both extremes,
being the origin of Arianism and Monophysitism (did I spell that right?). It
also had a substantial tradition of Orthodoxy (i.e. the side that won), which
explains why a) there were a number of riots between christian sects in
Alexandria and b) Alexandria was cited in the council of 381(?) as being one
of the two exemplar churches of orthodoxy (the other being Rome).
