Dear All,
I have been asked to give a short talk on the early history of the parish of
Closeburn in SW Scotland and I wondered if anybody would propose any thoughts
about the supposed "dedication" here.
The place-name is 1165x1214 _Kyllosbern_, 1264_Kyllosebern_, 1278
_Killosbern_. The second element of this has been taken to be the personal
name Osbern, "an English saint" (WJ Watson, HCPNS, but who also suggests
_Osbran_, anchorite and bishop of Cluain Creamha in Roscommon, died 752).
Does anyone have any particulars of this "English saint" Osbern?
Henry Gough-Cooper
