Along with wine, dine, etc. is what I call the LBJ treatment because that is
the way Lyndon Johnson treated his fellow politicians while he was president.
If he wanted something from them he used every tactic imaginable and it was
almost always face to face. He was so good at it that he firmly believed
that given an hour or two in the same room he could convince Ho Chi Minh to
end the war in Vietnam.
Anyway, back to the Middle Ages, I've always felt Justinian was the same sort
