I fear I was not been keeping up with this thread; when in a bookshop
trying to pick up an outstanding order I saw the following and was prompted
to glance therein...:
Williamson, Richard. (1978) The Great Yew Forest; the natural history of
Kingley Vale Sussex.
which has a short section on the history of the Yew Tree
...suggests yews were kept because there were no palm trees and quotes
William Caxton (c.15) as a reference for this ...
... also mentions but does not explore the Roman association of the yew tree
with the passage of the soul ...
which also has references
including one to a history of the yew tree in England (c.19th)
and another on the Romans in Britain (c,19th)
I will pass back that way early next week in another attempt to pick up my
order so if anyone's interested I'll make a note of the references.
Regards
John A.W. Lock
