You are right in your recollection. Gill does not approach the
issue there or in his work on the Council of Florence. Few do.
It always has been a tough sell to present an auto-da-fe as an expression
of caritas.
On the other hand, Aquinas' synthetic idealism often sounds to me like a
wish list for a 'Western' position on many issues; That the wish list was a
lot better than what was actually occurring may well account for the appeal
of Thomas thought in some Byzantine ecclesiastical circles ( esp. at
Constantinople)
