Thank you all for the warm-hearted and coolheaded suggestions. I
probably won't go to London (too far from Eugene, Oregon), but I've made
notes of several books to look for in the university library. The Stock
and McSheffrey sound particularly interesting, but unfortunately some
other scholar thought so too and will have them until Nov. 22.
Bosch's name was indeed Jeroen van Aken (or Aquen, or Acken, etc.), and
he used the pseudoLatinized form Jheronymus and the last part of 's
Hertogenbosch when he signed paintings (only half a dozen times that we
know of). I hadn't heard that anybody ever called him Bois, but it's
not surprising: he was El Bosco in Spain. 's Hertogenbosch means "in
the neighborhood of the Duke's Woods." The Dutch have shortened it now
to "Den Bosch" and have stopped pronouncing the ch at the end. Good
for them.
