However, there is a real and continuing distinction between sisters and nuns. Nuns are contemplative women who take solemn perpetual vows. Sisters are usually involved in more "active" public pursuits and take simple vows. Post Vatican II women religious take this distinction very seriously, though I have the impression that it was not an issue before that council.
