Re Elizabeth Whittaker's recent comments, I would like to add my own. I am not
a Christian and am lapsed in my own religion. Right now, I am struggling to
understand the origins of post classical theatre in the western world, which
was born in the rites and ceremonies of this very, vernable institution. I am
very grateful to those who have helped me, but have, on occasion, been flayed
for my ignorance of things which are common knowledge to the more erudite on
this list. Once, when I made a mistake re Innocent II and his injunctions
against performance in the church (it wasn't really him at all, but Innocent
IV, but I had no way of knowing that since I was simply citing what I had read
in an article by somebody else) I was subjected to what I consider humiliation
by those (particularly one) who used the opportunity to display their erudition
at my expense. Frankly, I have remained a "lurker" because I am afraid to ask
naive questions because I do not enjoy playing the fool. I must add that I have
received invaluable help off list from members of this list. I can't thank
them enough. I have made my inquiries off list becasue, again, I was afraid of
exposing my ignorance to the whole list. I think the sub-text of Elizabeth's
note was simply this: Are non Catholic scholars welcome here? Are inquiries
and discussions limited to those who "know?" In any case, I am staying on
list, even if only a "lurker." If I understand the Church correctly, there is
a place for everyone at Her altar, even if only out of curiosity. yrs, t. ault
