If you're working with these issues, please consider submitting an abstract
for my K'zoo 2000 session, "Getting High: Madness, Mysticism, and Other
Modes of Transcendence in the Middle Ages."
As the title suggests, this session invites readings and theorizations of
the pararational -- from all disciplines of medieval studies.
"Getting High" can encompass all sorts of altered states in the Middle Ages,
from mystical rapture to mob action to far subtler forms of transcendence.
The session can include such diverse topics as: reconceptualizing mystical
ascent (either as a viable concept or in an individual text), examining the
social (totemic) functions of ordinary items such as clothing or
intoxicants, or exploring the nuances of gender, sexuality, race, or class
in a representation of madness.
