Dear Group,
A recent article in Newsweek ("The Silent Anguish of the Healers" by Zeev E.
Neuwirth, M.D. -- September 13, 1999) references two studies that purport to
demonstrate that patient satisfaction, adherence to medical therapy and
improvements in patient health were most correlated with patients' trust in
their physician, the physician's knowledge of the patient's home life,
health beliefs and personal values. The studies referenced are a 1998 study
by researchers at the New England Medical Center's Health Outcomes Institute
and a 1998 study by researchers at the University of California-Davis School
of Medicine.
Unfortunately, there is little more to go on than the information I
presented above, and Medline searches have been fruitless. Does anyone know
of these studies or any other reputable studies of the impact of the
physician-patient relationship on health outcomes?
Thank you very much for your assistance.
Dave
