First Nations' People is the term taken up by indigenous people living
within Canada. The term is intended to draw attention to the fact that
they are colonized peoples. In addition, the term makes explicit that
indigenous peoples here originally comprised many nations (with distinct
histories, languages, traditions, and so on) and struggle to do so
despite colonization, imperialism, racism, forces which have positioned
them as a homogeneous group of "Indians".
Canadians do not, generally speaking, refer to themselves as
"Americans". We regard people who have US citizenship as "Americans"
and the United States as "America".
