What exactly is Singer teaching at Princeton? I asked a friend who is
completing her PhD on Marleau-Ponty whether she had heard of Singer. She
recalled learning his stuff in her undergraduate philosphy course. She was
able to recall and tell me that he was Utilitarian and what his main ideas
were and that he co-wrote with Helen Kuhse (whose book she had read also).
Straight away, without having any exposure to disability research, was able
to recognise and articulate that it was ok to have the academic freedom to
put forward your positions, there was some ethical responsibility to not
have it be (can't remember the word...means vilifying, harmful)...She said
his work was presented, but students were critical enough and sensible
enough to see the flaws as with other 'philosophical' works. Good students
should be able to do that.
Now what was my point?..Oh yes..any chance of Singer shooting himself in
the foot with this?
