Prof. Colin Ferguson 1945-1999
It is with great sadness that we have to inform the structural and tectonic
geological community of the death of Colin Ferguson. He died on Saturday
28th August after an 8 month battle with cancer and was cremated on 6th
September in his home village of Burton Joyce, Nottingham. Until about 10
years ago Colin was a stalwart of the structural scene and in particular
the TSG. He was an extremely imaginative and novel thinker. Never
constrained by a single scientific discipline, Colin published articles on
field geology, metamorphic petrology, strain analysis, rheology,
statistical methods and theoretical fluid mechanics. It was this breadth
of ability and diversity of interest that eventually steared him away from
structural geology and towards environmental sciences. After a short spell
in the private sector Colin took a chair at Trent University where he
founded the Centre for Research into the Built Environment. A year ago he
accepted a chair at the University of Nottingham where he continued his
cutting edge work on land quality management. It will be no surprise to
people that new him that he very quickly became an international leader in
his new field.
Colin was an inspirational figure. Many of us, students and colleagues alike,
owe a great deal both to the personal and intellectual impact he has had on
our
lives.
