I think I want to add a slightly different response to this. I don't think
the list can help the fact that newcomers entering it enter at different
points in different discussions. The question of Singer has been returned
to several times in my lifetime of having been a member of this list (which
believe it or not is fairly short in comparsion to some) and, on the basis
of my past experience, I would argue that the present discussion on Singer
has been much more informed, detailed and, dare I say, civilised than some
past discussions. Like most discussions it will live its life and move on
... until the next time.
However, with particular reference to Ian's comment, I am interested in why
he thinks Singer's ideas have absolutely no relevance to or are very
distant from the kind of things he engages with and the context,
geographical or otherwise, in which he engages with them. I'm afraid that
history suggests otherwise. What may not seem to be relevant now, almost
certainly will be in years to come as everything becomes more globalised. I
too get bored with ethics sometimes, but I feel I can't afford to ignore it.
So, Ian, I agree with Laurence and Paul. Hang on in there and please
contribute your own ideas. Parallel discussions have been known!
Best wishes
Mairian
